What is the Bible? In the Bible, God reveals Himself to us through His words. It's a gift from Him, given to teach us how to be in relationship with Him. The Bible isn't a history book written by smart people for other smart people. It's a story told by God about how He wants all of us - including you! - to have a relationship with Him and live as He designed for us. The Bible show us that we don't have it all figured out and that God is there for us when we don't understand or can't find what we're looking for. It's like a magic storybook, if you will. But instead of having an illustrator draw the pictures for you, God writes it all down, one letter at a time. The Bible is the most read and most owned book in the history of the world. It has over 3.2 billion copies printed! That's more than every amusement park ticket sold combined! And if you stacked up all those copies of the Bible, they'd reach over 218 million feet into the air. That's an average of about 45,000 feet per book! But not only is the Bible the most read and most owned book ever, it's also the most stolen. Throughout history, people have tried to destroy the Bible (see: The Dead Sea Scrolls). Signs of this destruction remain today: manuscripts lost in fires; books torn to shreds; and Bibles with missing pages and covers. One of the saddest stories comes from a time when Christians were persecuted and tortured by people who hated them for their faith (the "bad guys" in this story). The Christians were forced to hand over their Bibles or suffer torture. The torture was so brutal that it often broke people's hands! But even though their hands were broken, the Christians would hold up the Bible (which was often chained to their wrists) and say to the bad guys, "Take this. It's worth much more than my hand." What does the Bible look like? The Bible is not just one book - it's 66 books, written over 1,600 years by 40 writers. Think about that for a moment. Forty writers over 1,600 years writing 66 books that fit together into one story! The New Testament starts with four gospels which tell us about Jesus. The next 27 books are letters written by apostles and leaders of the early church. The last 16 books are called "the Apocrypha" and were written by the early church but lost during the time of the Roman Empire. If you were one of those 40 writers, you would each write a book in your own style with your own style of words, like every author in the world. But because they were writing about Jesus, their words are always crystal-clear - even when they're cursing people! The story of Jesus happens in real life. cfa1e77820
